Maverick County Sheriff's Office(PRESS RELEASE)-January 05, 2015
Deputies on patrol in the Pct. 2 sector of Maverick County were led on a vehicle pursuit Friday Dec.2, ultimately apprehending two seventeen year-olds. At approximately 1:38 AM, units observed a 2003 white Chevrolet pickup turning off of Marco Drive without any headlights on. Deputies then attempted to perform a routine traffic stop when the pickup accelerated at a high rate of speed, traveling westbound on Memo Robinson Road. Dispatchers were then contacted to advise of a vehicle pursuit.
The Chevrolet turned southbound onto Eidson road when the driver lost control of the vehicle due to the slick roadway. A county unit then attempted to block the vehicle from moving but the driver accelerated and struck the county patrol unit head on on two different occasions before putting the vehicle in reverse and accelerating, causing the vehicle to fall into a small canal.
The driver of the vehicle, identified as Sergio Mendez, initially fled the scene on foot before being later apprehended inside of an abandoned mobile home on Sandalo Street. The Passanger, Ovidio Arrellano III, safely exited the vehicle and obeyed officer commands. Both occupants were then transported to the Tom Bowles Detention Center pending charges of evading arrest with a motor vehicle, aggravated assault with a motor vehicle, and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. Both Mr. Mendez and Mr. Arrellano refused medical attention at the time of the incident report.
A routine check og the vehicle's license plates later revealed that the vehicle had been entered into the TCIC/NCIC system as a stolen vehicle out of the Eagle Pass Police Department. The vehicle was then transported to the Maverick County Sheriff's Office for investigative purposes.
