The Maverick County Sheriff's Office is now accepting applications for a dispatcher position. Applicants must:


  • Must be 18 Years of Age or Older
  • United States Citizen
  • Have a High School Diploma or GED
  • Clear Criminal History

Maverick County Sheriff's Office(PRESS RELEASE)-December 29, 2014


Units responded to the Elm Creek sector of Maverick County Sunday evening, at approximately 8:00 PM, after recieving reports of a possible jack-knifed trailer on Highway 277. Deputies at the scene spoke with a Pedro Cerna, the operator of a 2006 Volvo tractor truck, whose box trailer was impeding highway traffic. Mr. Cerna stated he was traveling south on US Highway 277 when he made a left turn onto a property and the trailer's stands got stuck when the floor level dropped. United States Border Patrol officers and Texas Department of Public Safety officers assisted the Maverick County Sheriff's Office with traffic control as a wrecker finally managed to pull the box trailer off of the highway.

Deputies were called to the scene of a motor vehicle accident near the Dimmit County line Friday morning, minutes past the 8 AM hour. At approximately 8:02 AM units were dispatched to Highway 277 East, where they arrived to make contact with fifty-six year old Gabriel Jalomo, the driver of a white 2004 International flatbed tow truck. Mr. Jalomo told officials that he was attempting to avoid striking a deer on the roadway when he lost control of the flatbed and high the guardrail. The impact caused the vehicle to rollover once, landing upright. Mr. Jalomo refused medical attention at time of the report and the Texas Department of Public Safety and arrived and has since taken over the investigation.

County units responded to a motor vehicle accident at the intersection of El Indio Highway and FM 2030 December 26th, at approximately 7:26 AM. Deputies on scene made contact with the driver of a 2015 Black GMC Acadia, who said she was traveling westbound on FM 1021 when a red Oldsmobile Alero on FM 2030 failed to yield the right of way and struck the front quarter panel. The driver of the 2001 Oldsmobile stated that he never saw the GMC. Both the driver and the occupant of the Acadia as well as the driver of the Alero were transported to the Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center for further medical evaluation. The accident is under investigation by the Maverick County Sheriff's Office.

Maverick County Sheriff's Office(PRESS RELEASE)-December 24, 2014


Units were dispatched to Thompson road on Tuesday, December 23rd, in regards to a motor vehicle accident. Minutes after 8:54 PM, deputies arrived at the scene and made contact with the driver of a 2005 white Chevrolet Impala, Identified as nineteen year-old Hector Alejandro Martinez. Mr. Martinez told officers that he was travelling northeast on Thompson Road when he broke and skid approximately 246 feet after attempting to avoid hitting a dog that crossed the roadway. That movement caused the Impale to collide with a stationary tractor trailer parked on the side of the road. Mr. Martinez was cited for not having a driver's license and for failure to maintain a safe speed. He would be taken to the Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center for injuries sustained in the vehicle accident.

Sheriff Tom Schmerber and the staff at the Maverick County Sheriff's Office have been active over the last two weeks collecting donations and gifts for their annual toy drive.The gifts, set to be distributed on December 24th, will be given to those less fortunate and in need. The Maverick County Sheriff's Office thanks all those who donated their time and effort in helping put a smile on a child's face this Christmas. A special thank you goes out those local businesses that donated to the cause.

Sheriff's units responded to a single motor vehicle accident at the intersection of US Highway 57 and Loop 481 Monday afternoon, near the 1:45 PM hour. Deputies arrived to the scene and found a 2009 maroon Chevrolet Equinox off the roadway with damages sustained to the front end. The male driver, a native of Uvalde, Texas, stated he lost control of the vehicle when he came to the intersection and caused him to skid off of the highway, hitting a chain link fence. A female passanger stated that the vehicle had mechanical problems prior to the incedent. Both occupants refused medical attention at the time of the report. The Texas Department of Public Safety arrived at the location and took over the investigation.

Maverick County Sheriff Tom Schmerber hosted a holiday breakfast for the staff of the The Maverick County Sheriff's Office and Tom Bowles Detention Center Monday morning. Guests in attendance included Consul Ismael Naveja Macias, County Commissioner Roberto Ruiz, and County Commissioner Asalia Casares. Staffers were treated to a traditional breakfast of barbacoa and tamales.

Sheriff Schmerber and the staff of the Maverick County Sheriff's Office, Tom Bowles Detention Center, and the Maverick County Detention Center take this time to wish the public a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Best wishes and safe travels.

Maverick County Sheriff's Office(PRESS RELEASE)-December 19, 2014



County units were dispatched to Memo Robinson Road and Oaxaca Street early Thursday morning in regards to a single vehicle motor vehicle accident. Forty year old Claudia Picazo told officers she was driving southbound on Oaxaca street when a dog suddenly crossed her path, causing her to swerve in order to avoid hitting the animal. The driver then lost control of the 2013 Chevrolet Tahoe she was operating and struck the railing to the drainage ditch. Ms. Picazo and her passengers all refused medical attention at the time of the report.

Deputies responded to calls of a motor vehicle accident at the intersection of FM1021(El Indio Highway) and Chula Vista Road Friday morning. At approximately 5:16 AM deputies were on scene to observe a 2001 black Ford Expedition involved in an accident with a 1999 black GMC Sierra. The Expedition had extensive damages to its right side from the impact while the brunt of the damages to the Sierra occurred in the front panel. EMS was summoned to the location, where the driver of the Expedition was treated and taken to the Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center for further medical attention. The driver of the Sierra refused medical attention at the time of the report.

Sheriff Tom Schmerber had the privilege of participating in a ceremony honoring young Matthew Hernandez at the Early Childhood Center Monday Morning. The ceremony, attended by local dignitaries and law enforcement and first responder officials, was in gratitude of Matthew's efforts to save his family from a fire that destroyed the Hernandez Residence. Sheriff Schmerber was honored to recognize Matthew and the Maverick County Sheriff's Office joins the Sheriff in commending Matthew for his heroic actions.

Maverick County Sheriff's Office(PRESS RELEASE)-December 8, 2014


Maverick County deputies responded to a structural fire on the 100 block of Sandalo Street Friday evening, near the 7:45 hour. Deputies observed a white mobile home fully engulfed in flames upon arrival and made contact with the homeowner, who stated that she had been noticing the smell of smoke in the front area of the home for weeks. The owner added that the smell was ruminating again from the same area and noticed flames shooting from behind a recliner. The female and her children were able to exit from the home safely and Eagle Pass Fire Department crews were summoned to the location, where they were able to extinguish the fire. Department investigators determined the cause of the fire was due to an electrical short.

Maverick County Sheriff's Office(PRESS RELEASE)-December 2, 2014


At approximately 4:51 PM Monday Afternoon, deputies were summoned to the intersection of Buena Vista Road and Bella Vista Road in reference to a motor vehicle accident. Officers arrived at the locale to find a Chevrolet Impala involved in an accident with a Chevrolet pick-up truck. Te driver of the Impala, which suffered damages to its left rear side, stated he had pulled his vehicle over to attend to his child when the truck struck him from behind. The truck itself sustained injuries to the front right side. A female passenger in the Chevrolet Impala was transported to the Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center for further medical treatment while all other occupants of both vehicles refused medical attention at the time of the accident.

Deputies responded to assistance calls from Zavala County in pursuit of a vehicle Sunday evening. Units assisting arrived at mile marker 394 on Highway 57, near Matthews Ranch, to find a 2004 red Ford F-150 overturned and unoccupied. Zavala deputies stated an unknown male excited the vehicle and ran across the highway into a ranch property. A search of the area found no possible suspects. Maverick County dispatch advised deputies that the Ford pickup was reported stolen out of San Antonio. Zavala County has since taken over the investigation.

Units were dispatched to a the intersection of Main Street and North Veterans Boulevard early Sunday morning, in regards to a motor vehicle accident involving an Eagle Pass Police Department police unit. At approximately 2:17 AM, deputies arrived to make contact with the female driver of a white Chevrolet SUV, who stated she was turning left on North Veterans Blvd. when she did not see the police unit and struck the front left panel. The female driver also stated that she was texting while driving and that caused her to wreck. Two people were transported to the Fort Ducan Regional Medical Center for further evaluation, including the driver of the police unit.

Deputies responded to a motor vehicle accident at the intersection of Wagon Wheel and Ghost Rider Road Saturday evening. Deputies arrived at the locale at approximately 11:12 PM to find a 2001 maroon GMC Yukon and 2013 black Dodge Ram pick up truck with sustained damages. Witnesses at the scene stated that the driver of the Dodge, later identified as Luis Antonio Tovar, was traveling east on Ghost Rider Road when he failed to make a complete stop at the intersection, causing him to collide with the Yukon traveling southbound on Wagon Wheel Road. The occupants of both vehicles refused medical attention on scene. Further investigations revealed that Tovar was intoxicated and refused to take a series of standardized field sobriety exams. Mr. Tovar was placed under arrest and was transported to the Tom Bowles Detention Center for processing.

United States Customs and Border Protection reaches out to the Maverick County Sheriff's Office, Saturday Evening, after a stolen weapon was apparently recovered at the United States Port of Entry #2. Deputies made contact with customs officers, who stated that two male subjects were traveling back into the United States from Mexico when one of the males attempted to declare a weapon given to him by his late grandfather. CBP officers conducted a NCIC/TCIC check on the firearm, which came back as stolen by the Ft. Lauderdale Police Department. Officers took custody of the weapon and contacted the Maverick County Sheriff's Office to conduct further investigations.

Sheriff's units were dispatched to the Baltica Street sector of Maverick County on November 27th, minutes past the 11 PM hour, after receiving reports from concerned citizens of suspicious activity in the area. Deputies were able to arrive in time to make a traffic stop on a 2002 white Mitsubishi Lancer, driven by twenty-six year old Ramiro Sixto De Leon, III. During questioning of the driver, deputies observed several brown cellophane-wrapped bundles, commonly used in the transport of narcotics, in plain sight. The packages were later determined to be marijuana and total weight of the contraband seized was 138.8 pounds. Mr. De Leon was arrested and transported to the Tom Bowles Detention Center for processing.

County deputies responded to a single motor vehicle rollover accident on FM 1021 near the Maverick County landfill Wednesday afternoon. Units arrived to find a tan Ford Expedition with extensive damage to its left side. Emergency service crews were at the scene to treat the female driver, who would later be transported to the Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center for further medical evaluation. The Texas Department of Public Safety also was at the scene and took over the accident scene.

Maverick County Sheriff's Office (PRESS RELEASE)-December 1, 2014



County units responded to a motor vehicle accident in the Tierra Del Sol sector of Maverick County Tuesday afternoon. At approximately 6:50 PM, deputies arrived at the location to find a white Ford Ranger truck and a black Dodge pick-up truck in the middle of the street. The Dodge sustained damages to the right wheel area while the Ranger suffered damages to the front bumper area. Timothy Esparza, the driver of the Dodge, and his passenger were both treated at the scene by Eagle Pass Ambulance crews. The Driver of the Ford Ranger immediately fled the scene. This case remains under investigation.

Thirty year-old Belinda Montelongo was arrested Tuesday November 25th on charges of introducing prohibited substances into a correctional facility, a third degree felony. During a visitation, Mrs. Montelongo smuggled approximately 7.2 grams of marijuana into the Tom Bowles Detention Center, which was wrapped under gray duct tape and placed underneath a vending machine. The substance was detected and Montelongo was taken into custody. This case will be referred to the District Attorney's office for prosecution.
